"Beneath
the
Southern Cross"

Canberra Composer Kurt Hahn has
written a number of compositions originating from his own experiences.
"Beneath the Southern Cross" is no exception. He fell in love with Australia
on his first night of July 21, 1959, while in the Migrant Camp "Bonegilla",
when he stood outside the camp and marveled at the sky's night beauty and
the quietness of the Australian Bush. Some 45 years later this love of
Australia became a raging passion in him when he traveled around the
Kimberleys /Pilbara regions and the Nullarbor Plain for 9 weeks, while
camping beneath the starry heavens.
The composition is an ode to the vast outback of Australia as it sleeps
safely "Beneath the Southern Cross."
The composition begins with an imitation of the Didgeridoo pounding out its
relentlessly pulsating rhythm. (A real Didgeridoo may be used if available.)
The brass section gradually enters building the crescendo that signals the
setting of the sun sinking over the horizon with a repeated, fanfare-like
figure beginning with bar 9 leading to a pianissimo at bar 26, that
introduces the theme played by the woodwinds.
At Bar 45 the brass joins the theme and the optional choir. If a choir is
used, the dynamics of the Band must be altered according to the size of the
choir.
The composition concludes with a recapitulation of the fanfare that is now
punctuated by the brass and rhythm sections of the bandThis
downloadable archive contains a full conductor's score and all individual
parts as follows...
flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Bassoon,
Oboe, Trumpet, Horn in F, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Percussion 1,
